Your Social Security number ( SS# ) was never meant as a fail-safe ID, nor to be used as a unique identifier. The original intent for the SS# was to be used as an account number for retirement.
Key concerns are Social Security simple number mix-ups that cause one’s account to have multiple names associated with the number. But even a simple mix up can lead to hassles, especially when applying for credit, as in the purchase of a home or investment property.
And then, there is the more harmful intent on using someone’s SS# to qualify for purchases as cell phone & contracts – cable service – alter medical records – avoid having to pay required deposits.
If a mistake has occurred or a person has stolen your SS#, to correct can become an administrative nightmare, and even debt collectors can become involved.
David Migoya of the Denver Post article highlights in his article the issues and items at hand regarding Social Security numbers.
Some things Social Security cardholders can do to avoid trouble:
• Check your credit report at least once yearly to ensure it has no information that isn’t yours.
• Check pay stubs to ensure the proper number is recorded.
• Review annual Social Security wage statements to be sure the data match your W-2s.
• Ask to see a copy of the credit report obtained by a business if you’ve applied for credit.
