The Boulder County ditches have a huge impact on today’s real estate market and property rights.
At one time, Boulder County was only short-grass prairie. Not a tree in sight until you accessed the mountains. What changed the Boulder Valley landscape into urban forest, and farmland: Ditches and Reservoirs. Which in turn is part of Colorado’s & Boulder County’s agricultural and ranching heritage.
Ditches seem to be everywhere in our County, at least for those that notice. I live in sight of the Davidson and the Goodhue Ditches. Most take for granted the many “ditches” in our area are the primary source that changed the landscape that it is today, creating new ecosystems, destroyed some, and creating a history of water law.
The legal standing of Water rights & Ditches are only behind the railroad and mining in our great State of Colorado. See associated article
On our home front, what really stopped the Boulder City Council to take Ted Turner up on his offer to donate 13 buffalo to run on the Davidson mesa. Besides expense, the ditches really controlled the buffalo decision process that turned free roaming buffalo into a no go proposition.
